An underrated adventure in Bali you need to try!

This is an activity I don’t see posted about much in Bali, but if you have kids, you should definitely add it to your list.

Bali is known for beautiful beaches, gorgeous waterfalls, lush jungles and picturesque rice fields. Bali is also home to 3 volcanoes. Tipped off by a friend (@wildadventuremum), we set off with some visiting friends to explore one of the volcanoes by jeep. The kids loved it and the parents did too.

It is super popular to go for sunrise, but since that would have meant a 4am pickup, we decided against that. Later in the day was just as fun for us and the kids were much happier for it. The ride is about 2 hours long and takes you through fertile farmland as you make your way to the lava fields. The ride on the lava field is bumpy, but a lot of fun. The kids thought it was such a novelty to touch real lava (rocks) and be in a terrain that is so different from the rest of Bali.

We booked with Bagus Bali Sunrise Trekking and it all worked out well. They arranged for transport from our house in Sanur and the guides and jeeps were great. We paid about $115 USD for 4 adults, 3 kids (2 jeeps) and transport to and from Sanur (in a nice air conditioned van, not a jeep). So about $16 per person. Not bad for a full day of fun!

Bonus tip: On the way there we stopped at Tis Cafe by the Tagalalong Rice Terraces for a coffee and after the tour stopped at a cafe overlooking the high mountain lakes and had amazing fresh fish. It was a little chilly for the kids at altitude, so do bring long sleeves just in case.

  • When I first moved abroad I felt like I needed to keep so much of our lives from America the same. Cooking familiar dishes, keeping up the same pace of life…

But so much has changed these past few years. I’ve learned to slow down, to find ways to make life easier and that allow me to spend more time with my family. Food delivery has been a godsend.

  • Many of you have asked why we’re leaving Bali and moving to Portugal. 🇵🇹

The main reason why is that we want to be closer to our families. It is currently a minimum travel time of 30 hours to get to our families in the US. We’re looking forward to being able to pop back for a few days here and there when we want to or need to!

We’re also feeling really sad about leaving Bali. We love our life and community and friends here. Starting over again feels daunting but being clear on the reasons we’re doing this makes us know we’re doing the right thing. I’ll be posting more about our move and the process of it all here so stay tuned for more in the coming months. ❤️
  • And snacks. Snacks all over the place. People handing out snacks as you walk down the terminal 😂
  • We’ve stayed at so many amazing family friendly hotels and villas in Bali over the past 3 years. Here are 5 we’d go to again in a heartbeat and why.

Pssst! Be sure to follow @semicuratedlife for part 2!

1. Lembongan Island Beach Villas. You can’t beat the location, the pool overlooking the beach and the options for villa size. @lembonganislandbeachvilla

2. Mundunk Mountain Estate. Probably our favorite villa we’ve stayed at in Bali. Gorgeous construction, insane views, hot tub and fire pit while enjoying those cool mountain mornings and evenings. @mundukmountainestate

3. Sunrise Hill Camp. We absolutely loved our time glamping here with our own private hot tub. We also loved the BBQ dinner each evening. Do be aware of the flies that are present mostly in the morning. A great budget option. @sunrisehillcamp

4. Casa JOMO. A gorgeous villa in Uluwatu that has thought of everything from pool fences and shallow areas for kids to splash to design forward interiors and an amazing rooftop to relax at sunset. Our kids barely left the playroom and I’m still dreaming about those comfortable beds. @casa_jomo

5. Padma Resort Ubud. This hotel is outside Ubud and has the most beautiful grounds. There are two kids clubs, one of which is in a garden with so many fruits and vegetables growing all around and so many animals to meet and feed. Heated pool, massive buffet and lots to explore on site. @padmaubud

Have you stayed at any of these? What else would you add to the list?
  • 🌴 Ready to press pause on the chaos and reconnect with you?

This isn’t just a trip to Bali—it’s a curated experience for women who are ready for more beauty, more meaning, more space to breathe.

✨ Think:

💫 Riding e-bikes through rice terraces
💫 Swimming with manta rays
💫 Long dinners and real connection
💫 Spa days, sacred ceremonies, and villas that feel like dreams

Oh—and nobody asking you for a snack 😉
